Sunderland is a welcoming, bustling city set right on the coast and at the mouth of the River Wear. It is home to the Nissan car manufacturing plant. It has a very impressive university where it specialises in science and houses the world-famous pharmacy school as well the newly established school of medicine.

    Sunderland has an array of wide sandy beaches and acres of green spaces. Its culture includes Sunderland Empire TheatreNational Glass Centre and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens. Add to that a fascinating history, outstanding sporting attractions and a family-friendly programme of events and festivals.

    Not far away is Washington Wetland Centre which is a short drive from Sunderland where you will find a wildlife haven for rare species of birds that you can get up close to Washington Old Hall which is the home of the ancestors of the first President of the USA.

    There is also the famous Penshaw Monument and Herrington Country Park. The Greek-style temple dominates the skyline and on a clear day, vast swathes of the North East can be seen all around.

    There are a wide range of different types of properties to choose from, Victorian terraced houses or a stylish new development as well as old fashioned quirky quaint houses.

  • Transport

    Sunderland is situated on the North East coast and is connected to the rest of the UK by excellent road and rail links. It is accessible from the A1(M), the main north-south road link from London and Scotland. Sunderland is a compact city and once you arrive you can travel hassle-free by jumping on one of the local buses or a Tyne and Wear Metro to get around the city centre, the coast and further afield to Washington and Houghton-le-Spring. 

    By rail, travelling to Sunderland only takes 3 hours from London Kings Cross on direct trains, which also stop at stations including Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe, Darlington, Northallerton, Thirsk, York and Peterborough, using Virgin Trains East Coast

    Newcastle International Airport is only a forty-five minute drive from Sunderland city.

  • Did you know 

    Sunderland was the largest ship building town in the world. The first recorded shipbuilder was Thomas Menville in 1346. By 1970 the city was building around 19 ships per year. The first iron ships were built at Sunderland in 1852.​
